And the people who say it doesn't matter whether it's true are obviously on some level wrong Because then it wouldn't matter if they said they were true I could post a short story I told you I made up and you'd give it the same amount of attention Which people clearly don't

Everyone knows this is how telling a bullshit story works irl You get many times as much "engagement" for saying something really happened to someone you know than for saying you saw it online, orbs definitely more than for "I just made up this cool story I thought would be fun"

And you get the most engagement BY FAR by saying that it actually happened to YOU Nothing is as exciting as having the subject of the story right here, in front of you, to react to in real time The problem is irl it's a lot easier to call you on your shit if you do that

But the genre requires the audience ot at least INTERACT with it as though it's true. Which means that a part of it is that you get to ask follow up questions, and theroetically, more things will happen.

Yeah that's the thing. I don't trust that we can tell the truth from the fiction, given how strange truth has shown itself to be

Did the Brexit Son twitter thread cross the atlantic earlier this year? It was a viral thread in the UK that started off as an amusing story of a man living in France, dealing with some expats who'd voted Brexit but hadn't prepared for it at all.

But as it went on, it became more and more obvious that it was a hoax, and the debate built about whether it matters, that it's just a funny story, all the usual stuff. But as it became clear he'd started being outed, he started covering his tracks, piling lies on lies.
