It isn't spelled out in the novella, Scrooge just yells at Fred that Christmas is for him a time for "paying bills without money" (ie on credit) But it seems like obviously implied that Fred's nice house was bought on a mortgage etc

I feel that it is implied in the subtext of the narrative that Fred's mother (Scrooge's absolutely beloved little sister) died in childbirth, and Scrooge never forgave him for it. from memory, um. "She died a woman, and had, I think, children." "ONE CHILD." "Your nephew!"
