Yeah so one of George Orwell's best essays was his profile of Charles Dickens from the POV of leftist politics and asking whether Dickens was a friend or foe to revolution And this is a recurring theme through all of Dickens' work - balking before really calling for change

A lot of rich people have Scrooge's arc as their actual life plan - spend the first 50 years of their life getting rich by fucking people over, then spend their retirement slowly undoing the damage via charity and getting cookies and applause for it It's very common

Is this true? It’s like the opposite of my motivations; giving charity is always distressing to me because I can’t avoid thinking about aaallll the other people I can’t afford to give anything to and so I tbh do it less than I optimally should. Sounds so weird to me to enjoy that

They don't enjoy it so much as feel good and use that feeling to justify being in a position where they can afford to help as many people as they want but choose to help the ones that give them the best pr. It's the feeling they enjoy, not the giving.
