This stuff isn't new, the Von Mises Institute went viral for doing a similar piece in defense of Scrooge way back in the 90s, and it keeps coming up since then The reason Dickens wrote the book is that Scrooge represents what was conventional economic wisdom back thenhttps://twitter.com/donmoyn/status/1342203193451798528 …

Anyway I embrace the edgelord version of the attack on Scrooge just as they're taking an edgelord defense of it Even ignoring the fact that he's an asshole with no friends, the "good things" about Scrooge are bad things A high household savings rate is a negative moral failing

Scrooge would be a better person if he wasted every penny he earned on booze and drugs and collectible figurines or whatever and he died with his books in the red He'd be paying people's wages and enabling them to pay other people's wages if he did so

Yeah so one of George Orwell's best essays was his profile of Charles Dickens from the POV of leftist politics and asking whether Dickens was a friend or foe to revolution And this is a recurring theme through all of Dickens' work - balking before really calling for change

Repeatedly Dickens falls back on a deus ex machina of a benevolent millionaire coming in at the end of the story to put everything right by writing a big check to everyone As Orwell points out, someone so eager to give money away seems unlikely to get rich in the first place

And, of course, A Christmas Carol, a short and very didactic and sentimental early work, is the ur-example and is all about giving a supernatural explanation for such a thing happening Which is all very satisfying within the story but Christmas ghosts don't seem that common irl

And, yeah, it's cheating The ending of the story where Scrooge is giving away his whole fortune and freaking people out at his great generosity is only possible because he was such an asshole for the whole first part of the story

A Scrooge who never got rich this way in the first place wouldn't be able to afford to buy the biggest turkey in the shop and surprise Bob Cratchit with it on a whim He wouldn't get to be a hero, to be the center of the story

I mean, I don't think he had to really dip into the stash for a large turkey.

The world would be a better place in countless little ways - Bob Cratchit might not be dirt poor in the first place, ten thousand people in London might not be suffering under predatory loans - but there'd be no one to give the credit to

That's the whole thing about this kind of sentimentalism Leftist politics is ultimately at odds with it (no gods, no heroes) The goal of socialism is a world without charity because there's no need or opportunity for it
