So, like, when they punch a fish out of "spite", do they understand the fish as a being similar to themselves, do they have a concept of resentment or blame, can they project feelings outward onto other entities the way we do?

Most people act like the creepiest possible answer to this question is "yes" and that an octopus is a person like a human being -- I think it's far far creepier if the answer is "no"

Only they're not, because each of their limbs has a subsidiary brain controling it that's capable of reacting faster than the main one can send messages back and forth, and can continue to operate independently for hours before dying if detached.

Like the experiments with severing the corpus callosum, it shows how blurry the concept of individuality is when we're already comprised of multiple semi-independent communicating parts that rationalise their actions as a collective post-hoc.
