I mean, "criminal record" kind of undersells the situation with Salling, who was busted with a huge archive of child pornography. It's not like the guy was a drunk driver.

I was pointedly avoiding getting into that and just focusing on the body count

You can, very broadly, say that Salling getting into child porn and killing himself upon exposure was "dying due to bad decisions based on poor impulse control" and that's a trait he has in common with Monteith being killed by his drug addiction But that's a *very* broad brush

Yeah, I'm gonna say that's super unfair to addicts, both in comparing it to pedophilia and painting it as an issue of impulse control

Well, I dunno Naya Rivera, who was one of the only people to give an interview about it because she'd dated Salling, said she'd had no indication he was a pedophile when they were together but that her impression of him was he was constantly chasing destructive "highs"

And she wasn't surprised when he ended up getting arrested for something really bad but was somewhat surprised at what it was

I dated/lived with someone for a couple of years who had a (I think?) similar propensity for just *something* bad. He'd take some pills, or start drinking at 10am, or shoplift. But that's different than a straight drug addiction. There's probably a fair amount of overlap…

Well sure I'm not saying it's all one thing at all, I think it's just that whatever propensities for negative behavior in general young people have will be massively amplified if you give them a lot of money and attention and not much genuine emotional support to match

Neither Salling nor Monteith were really child stars though, and they were both in their mid-20s when they started on Glee.

Monteith wasn't in show business at all as a kid, which is when he started using drugs; he was in rehab at 19 before he acted in anything. Salling did some acting, but was never famous before Glee, and I'm not sure he ever really made that much money.

Yeah, maybe this is just wanting to overgeneralize from the kind of show Glee was

The funny thing is that it would definitely be true of Finn and Puck, despite the actors having somewhat different backstories.

All that being said, it's not like fame and celebrity is easy on adults, either. And the money makes it a lot easier to afford drugs, and to ignore people who might be able to stop you otherwise.
