Rowling's books were never that great, and there were some warning signs in terms of unexamined bigotry in those books (goblins, house elves, etc.)

the first book has a child casually murdering a sentient being

the troll. Quirrell was less deliberate and less casual whereas it's clearly viewed as totally okay to murder a troll because it's a "lesser" race

this is unfortunately pretty common in fantasy literature. still shitty though.

Yeah, to some extent, they can't even figure out exactly what a troll is supposed to be. It appears to be the only one in the world, and it's...semisentient? It could be like a chimp got it, but it can kinda talk, right?

I got the impression it's more of a beast than a person but Potterverse doesn't have a concrete bestiary that makes sense; when Rowling tried to do so she had like the worst mixture of that whole "random arcane esoterica! magic and whimsy!" approach we've discussed and mundanity.

Fantastic Beasts explicitly tells us the Ministry classifies them as "beasts" and not "beings", although they toe right up to the line It's pretty clearly stated in her newsletter about trolls that it's mostly because wizards consider trolls too dangerous to be given rights

There's so much bullshit in all of this world-building, like centaurs demanding to be classified as "beasts" because hags are classified as "beings" and they don't want to be grouped with their ancient enemies or something???

Yeah, and they don't really fit into any sort of a cohesive world ecology. They exist, like many spells, just to be Wacky Reminders that this is a MAGIC boarding school. At first, anyways. Like what, are we being told dragons somehow obeyed the statute of secrecy?

Enforcement of the Statute of Secrecy is one of the justifications for wizards going out "monster-hunting"
