Rowling's books were never that great, and there were some warning signs in terms of unexamined bigotry in those books (goblins, house elves, etc.)

the first book has a child casually murdering a sentient being

the troll. Quirrell was less deliberate and less casual whereas it's clearly viewed as totally okay to murder a troll because it's a "lesser" race

Well, that's just par for the course for the fantasy genre, Legolas and Gimli having their orc killing contest But I'm pretty sure the troll in the first book isn't killed, just knocked unconscious

Calling it "murder" is a bit of a hot take, it's self-defense, Harry and Ron found it when it was about to kill Hermione in the girls' bathroom ...The girls' bathroom is kind of a predilection of hers isn't it

I mean everybody knows I'm very pro-murder and the operative word in my hot take was actually "casually"

I looked up the scene in the movie and they actually clarified this so the movie could keep its PG rating -- Hermione asks "Is it... dead?" and Harry says "I don't think so, just knocked out" and then it snorts and grunts as Harry pulls the wand out of its nose

You'd think the fact that it was alive meant they could interrogate it as to who let it out and sent it to the girls' bathroom in the first place, but I guess it's actually true that most wizards can only communicate with trolls by pointing and grunting

because in JKR's world you can evidently communicate with owls and snakes but not with humanoids

Tbf the ability to communicate with snakes makes you devil-spawn and the target of a witch hunt By witches, so a witch-hunt-squared

if Chamber of Secrets is really any indication, being able to communicate with snakes causes people to think you might be a racist, which as any white person knows is the most wretched of all fates
