Rowling's transformation from universally beloved children's author to leader of a hate movement is one of the most despicable uses of celebrity since Charles Lindbergh.

Rowling's books were never that great, and there were some warning signs in terms of unexamined bigotry in those books (goblins, house elves, etc.)

the troll. Quirrell was less deliberate and less casual whereas it's clearly viewed as totally okay to murder a troll because it's a "lesser" race

Yeah, to some extent, they can't even figure out exactly what a troll is supposed to be. It appears to be the only one in the world, and it's...semisentient? It could be like a chimp got it, but it can kinda talk, right?

No, trolls are a species, Quirrell is described as having had an unusual rapport with them in his monster hunting career, which is a hint that he's responsible for releasing the one in the Halloween chapter

I both believe you’re correct that trolls are sentient, and also that Rowling forgot or couldn’t comprehend that she had written them that way and that it would have consequences when they died.

The first book was a very PG-rated children's book and there's no onscreen deaths until Quirrell's, not even of the troll
