why were the Magi supposed to be such famed gift-givers anyway? gold, frankincense and myrrh were just hard assets. it's like getting cash except you basically have to take the extra step of selling it to somebody to have money to buy the shit you want

In your face symbolic gifts. Hey! We heard you have a new baby! We’ll bring gold to honor him as a king, but we’ll also bring a bunch of stuff used at ritual sacrifices & funerals. Because...um...no reason. Unless, well, Mary, did you know...?

This angle was overemphasized by later Christian commentators to make the whole thing prophetic In reality frankincense and myrrh are just expensive fragrances saved for special occasions, whether or not the occasion involved death or sacrifice

In fact myrrh was both known as an oil for anointing corpses and as a medicinal ointment for the living They also mixed it into wine and drank it, believing it had painkilling/intoxicant properties Mark has a Roman soldier give Jesus a mixture of wine and myrrh on the Cross

The myrrh was the ancient equivalent of giving someone a large amount of compact wealth in the form of high-grade uncut crystal meth
