This is totally true. The NHS is so prized now by most of us because we're well fucking aware that now there is no empire, and so no-one to exclude, it pisses off a lot of our rich folks that they can't make money from sick people the way they want to.

Still is. The right wing push for privatisation of the NHS is abetted and fueled by tabloid stories of foreigners* coming over here to leach off our NHS... including those who are actually NHS workers. * i.e. Black and brown people, and some of the less palatable Europeans...

And don't forget Windrush. After WWII, all residents of the Caribbean colonies were given British citizenship and encouraged to emigrate to the UK, in part to fill massive shortages in the shiny new NHS. Now they're suddenly being told they're non-citizens and being deported.
