I don’t understand how you could inject sperm into someone without their knowledge... or how they didn’t know what was up when this random doctor kept dropping in

Women were not taught very much about how their bodies worked back then, as a matter of "decency"

I mean honestly in an era where people are conditioned to trust doctors unquestioningly it makes sense to me she'd believe that it was a "medicine" they were applying to her cervix to treat her barrenness

Or, hell, maybe she did know but she just wanted a baby to relieve the pressure and shaming from her husband and her community for being barren

The most likely thing seems like to me is that they kind of knew but went along with it because of the scandal... but that’s not even a perfect explanation.

Yeah I mean you're right that this random doctor - who wasn't even the doctor in charge of the "treatment" - showing up to check on the kid every few years is sus af and if I were the husband I would definitely not be happy about it

The way the story is told, the author doesn't even really seem to consider the couple might have suspected anything The doctors at the college seemed to just assume all Pennsylvania farmers were stupid
