It's probably exaggerated in the American imagination, though. My understanding is that smallpox alone managed to devastate huge swaths of the west before the actual white settlers even arrived, so to some extent it's only true by narrow literalism

My impression is a lot of the Big Empty in the American interior is territory Native cultures were familiar with and passed through regularly but didn't live there because it's a terrible place to live I mean much of it is still uninhabited except on a technicality
