Hold on, am I missing something or did America really only give some people a one-time stimulus check of 1200 and expected everyone to be able to quit their jobs and stay home

It's not QUITE that bad, the US also funded increased unemployment benefits for everyone who was actually fired/laid off If you only got $1200 it's because you weren't eligible for unemployment because you already had a job or were already long term unemployed

People were making more on unemployment than people going to work during this pandemic and not every job gave hazard pay

Can confirm, work in construction, received my 1200. Worked all year, no hazard pay coverage. Friends who got laid off, received unemployment, and weekly got paid, many made 2-3x what they made while working.

Ideally the thing Republicans complained about -- "People make more money by getting laid off!" -- would push employers to raise wages Unfortunately "market forces" take time to work, when they work at all (The fact you can't get UI for a "voluntary quit" is a big problem here)
