Hold on, am I missing something or did America really only give some people a one-time stimulus check of 1200 and expected everyone to be able to quit their jobs and stay home

still pretty fucking bad though

No, not really. The US spent more on Covid-related economic measures than most other countries did. Way more. https://www.statista.com/statistics/1107572/covid-19-value-g20-stimulus-packages-share-gdp/ …

And you had to get fired/laid off to get it. If you quit for health reasons, no soap.

My state made "I've reduced my hours at work to avoid contracting/spreading the virus." A valid unemployment claim. It helped a lot of people -- but even if you qualified whether or not the money actually showed up was a crapshoot.

People were making more on unemployment than people going to work during this pandemic and not every job gave hazard pay
-
Can confirm, work in construction, received my 1200. Worked all year, no hazard pay coverage. Friends who got laid off, received unemployment, and weekly got paid, many made 2-3x what they made while working.
