You ever think about how Fred in A Christmas Carol doesn't have a last name Ebenezer Scrooge has a last name, Bob Cratchit has a last name, Jacob Marley has a last name, but the human character with next-highest billing does not

But we don't know anything about his dad -- Did his dad run off? Did his dad also die young? Did his dad live to a ripe old age and die very recently and Scrooge didn't bother showing up at the funeral? -- and nobody ever mentions his surname at all

It's a random thought but I guess it's, like, part of how cut off Scrooge is from everyone and everything that he only thinks "Fred" and never his full name Fred is married and Scrooge never thinks about his wife's name in narration at all (in the play adaptation it's Clara)

My headcanon is that Scrooge really really hated Fred's dad for "taking his sister away from him", given how close his bond was with Fan (because *their* dad was a neglectful piece of work) Then Fan dying in childbirth sealed it and he cut that whole branch of the family off

Headcanon is that Fred only even started trying to reconnect with Ebenezer as an adult Like he literally never knew him for his entire childhood, he only knew stories of how broken up his mom was that they became estranged, so he made it his personal mission to reach out

Like it explains just *how* icy the relationship is between the two of them and also just how sad it is But also why Fred doesn't actually like outright resent Scrooge Scrooge never actually personally abused him as a child, he just wasn't there
