DOOM Eternal wasn't a scam, even though it wasn't really my kind of game either. but I'm mostly an indie/boomer shooter guy so AAA isn't my domain still though, CDPR had a pretty decent track record and I'm not going to get mad at people who were hyped for sci-fi Witcher

The game is not, itself, a scam. The preorder model is a scam, no matter the quality of the game it's selling. The whole point is to get you to buy a game without knowing anything about it. To get sales independent of their product's quality.

I pre-ordered New Vegas and while that worked out I was still foolish for having done it Relatedly does anybody else remember when Steam used to do pre-order three, get four discounts? I had a regular L4D group that pre-ordered L4D2 that way, saved ~$12 each

They did that for Payday 2 too, and IIRC there was a bulk option on Among Us? I don't think there are a lot, relatively speaking, of the same kind of co-op-only games coming out, and also Steam's cut WAY down on the ability to purchase-store-trade-later games because of fraud.
