I mean, Winston County, Alabama seceded from the state after Alabama seceded from the US. This is just the Civil War version of "Everyone fought for independence from Britain" when in reality it was maybe 1/3rd for, 1/3rd against, and 1/3rd "leave us alone, please".

Eastern Tennessee *asked* to secede from Tennessee & the response was Confederate Army occupation. The locals took to the hills & fought as guerrillas, picking off officers & tying up enough CSA manpower that it was an important reason Grant's campaign in the West succeeded.

The USA provided them arms & ammunition but they remained irregulars. It was brutal fighting. A favorite trick was for a man to join the Confederates, gather information on their plans & then desert. Locals also smuggled people in & out of the state, because they knew the hills.
