People literally do not know what they mean when they say "leftist" Like, sure, EB is "left-of-center" by this benighted country's standards -- so are people her fans hate like Hillary Clinton Her fans who call her a "leftist" and mean "Marxist" though are deeply confusedhttps://twitter.com/dropoutnation/status/1338832235110260736 …

In fairness I had to look that term up. The concept is clear but I had literally never seen that word before.

It's just the original German for "Master Race" Which is a phrase most of us have heard before, but that we don't like thinking about the implications of much

Like when you say it in English you evoke pulp fiction Nazis who are these cartoon villains who want to create a science-fiction race of identically cloned superhumans And while that's *connected* to Nazi shit, for "normal" Nazis it just means how they see "normal" people

Like in the United States the simplest definition of "Herrenvolk" is just "white people" It's not really a big complicated nuanced thing, it's the fact that in the old-school laws we used to have white people *could not* be slaves while Black people were *assumed* to be slaves

And white people get all prickly about this, "I'm not a 'master', I'm dirt poor, I work hard for a living every day, I'm not part of some kind of 'master race'" But I mean you literally were in the antebellum South, you had all these legal rights as a result of being white

You personally might be poor compared to other white people but if you ever ended up in court against a Black person you automatically won, because courtrooms were entirely composed of people the same race as you That kind of thing

And then they avoid seeing how much of that is still in place de facto if not de jure because they want to believe it's all over and we're malingering. It's frustrating.
