I almost never hear people using the long version of your deadname, I don't even think of them as the same name

It was CONSTANT. Teachers and stuff, despite having a roster and all, would insist I was the longer version (I dunno why I'm coy about the name, it's out there, there's always just the chance of one stalker who doesn't know it yet deciding they're not going to stop saying it)

But it was equivalent to being named "John" and having people think it was somehow more respectful to call you "Jonathan" all the time People get my name right more since I transitioned

John and Jonathan are in fact different names, the H in John is because it's short for Yohanan (which is why in German it's "Johannes" and gets shortened to "Hans")

Yeah, Jonathan is related to Nathan, I think.

"Nathan" is "he gives" and "Jonathan" is specifically "God gives", like "John" is "God is gracious" and "Joshua" is "God saves" The "Jo-" particle is the shortening of YHWH for God's name, like the "jah" in "Hallelujah" ("Praise YHWH")

Yeah. Reminiscent of the funny scene in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade where he tries to spell Jehovah with a 'J' and almost dies because it's a 'Y' (Hebrew equivalent isn't quite a Y but close enough)

That was just... bad history "I" and "J" were considered two different ways to write the same letter in medieval times, a J is literally just an I with a little swash on the end of it to make a space between it and the preceding letters so they don't run into each other

All the way up to the American Revolution, it was still a fact known by pedants that I and J were officially two variants of the same letter It's why on Washington DC's street grid the numbered streets skip J Street (a fact the Jewish-American lobbying org J Street references)

The colorful story that there's no J Street in DC because of how unpopular John Jay was after signing the Jay Treaty with Britain is, sadly, untrue

Although that is a fun story The tale of people shouting out their windows "To hell with John Jay, and to hell with anyone who won't say to hell with John Jay" is the origin of "cancel culture"

Burning Jay in effigy as cancel culture really brings a new spin on early America
