Gigantic trucks and SUVs are also significantly more dangerous to drive because the bigger the car, the less you see in front of you.

also because pedestrians don't flip up onto the hood when they're struck, but are just rolled over

They’re such an American thing as well. Flatbed trucks are more unusual in Europe, and are pretty much the exclusive purview of people who actually need one - and as a result tend to be rather battered & beaten up. I’ve never seen on of those enormous gleaming penis substitutes.

Seriously most of the size difference is because the little one is a tool—enough space for one person and a helper to transport cargo—while the larger one is a family vehicle with seats for five or six, designed to satisfy macho babies.

Engineers have been steadily increasing the efficiency of car and truck engines. When Republicans control CAFE standards that goes into power. More power means bigger vehicles. When Democrats control CAFE standards, it goes into fuel efficiency. It's not just trucks either

My first time in USA I noticed with interest that instead of the European style of "White Van Man", there were all these pick-ups, about half of which looked woefully impractical.

Its really frustrating, because I, sincerely, want a small truck and you just cant find them anywhere here. Like, damn, Nissan, just sell me one of the tiny trucks you make for the Japanese market.

The rise in towing of gooseneck horse trailers has been unexpected, and frankly terrifying.
