KB's shtick seems to be opposing stereotypes of female directors by doing movies in genres that are as ridiculously masculine as possible

jude doyle wrote about her NEAR DARK, which crystallized for me that bigelow's deal is being fascinated by men, by masculinity. her movies are unsparing but also fascinated by it.https://doyles.substack.com/p/a-history-of-violence-near-dark-dir …

Strong agree, Hurt Locker is all about this too people just get critical blinders cause of the iraq war setting (which is important but is more tangential to the larger point being made)

Which, I've read interviews and accounts from soldiers, and that mentality isn't as uncommon as you'd think from successful disposal guys over there. There was a line that's been attributed to one: "I either get it right or it is suddenly not going to be my problem."

there's a particular joy in being very good at something that is very difficult and very dangerous, especially when you're in an overall social structure that strongly rewards and acclaims such competence

There's also something to be said about how, as sapient beings who evolved out of primates with a complex social structure, when your society needs members who are willing to sacrifice themselves for the good of the group, what that looks like psychologically is the death urge

Reluctantly, painfully doing it as a result of a rational choice based on altruistic virtue is too hard You can't rely on it A species that needs soldiers is going to have soldiers who think being horribly killed is fucking badass and protecting your own life is cowardice

And the way this is gendered, women are "supposed" to be the preservers of life and men "supposed" to be the ones who value life cheaply KB rebels against that, she wants to fully immerse in thanatos, in the glory and euphoria of carelessly throwing life away

Bodhi's samurai warrior poet thing in Point Break, that life is only truly beautiful for those who embrace its ephemerality, who are willing to throw away years of comfortable life in safety for one perfect moment

this is something that comes up often enough in "military psychology," and they have a somewhat different take it's not about the pursuit of perfection it's about the fear of shame, which--it turns out--is one of the few fears stronger than the fear of death
