People have SO MUCH repressed pain and anger about their parents that they turn into rabid defensiveness and they don't even try to hide it most of the timehttps://twitter.com/nberlat/status/1338656661721001986 …

Justifying child abuse with "My parents beat the shit out of me and I turned out fine" No you didn't, you turned out to be an emotionally brittle violent asshole just like they were

A lot of this is wrapped up in complex emotions about your parents and/or your culture. I’ve found it can be helpful to compare corporal punishment to other parenting practices that were once widespread but now we know are harmful, like unsafe sleep or use of car seats.

My parents put me to sleep on my stomach in a crib with bumpers and blankets. My grandparents rode in cars with small kids in their lap. They all loved their kids and thought they were keeping them safe and healthy, same as some (not all) people raised to hit their kids.

I mean, okay, but I don't think beating up your kids is really in the same category

Maybe it can be, maybe there are some families where "corporal punishment" was a purely ritualized application of medicine with no component of personal anger or retribution But it's not really them I care about
