I’m not saying they’re super similar in most ways, but I am talking about how to speak to people about it in a way that they won’t immediately shut out. Most people get defensive and stop listening at the suggestion that their parents and esp their culture are abusive monsters.

It helps to share with people a structure where parents who beat their kids might not be cruel but just trying to do the best they could with the knowledge they had. People can draw their own conclusions later about whether their own parents more were cruel and abusive...
