Like Dr. Laura, he's not technically breaking the rules because his PhD in psychology itself was never technically revoked But he is in fact actually barred from practicing after he was investigated by the TX Board over ethics complaints

And the fact that he's basically doing the same thing as what most people would think a psychologist or therapist does but *technically* is only an "entertainer" on TV and therefore it's all legal is very, very bad

I'm actually amazed he got away with it I think this is an area where because the overall "advice" and "life coaching" fields are so broad, he can get away with hiding his scarlet letter way more easily than in other fields

Like I'm absolutely certain if some lawyer were disbarred or voluntarily surrendered their license to practice after being dogged by ethics complaints, the Bar Association would not stand for them having a damn TV show called "Phil McGraw, Esq., Answers Your Legal Questions"

The state government, rather I'm given to understand that acting as someone's lawyer and giving them counsel in preparation to actually go to court is a bigger deal for unlicensed practice of law than the whole fake-court-fake-judge thing

I mean I'm also given to understand that in practice "disbarred lawyer" is different from "not a lawyer" Like me randomly starting up a column in a magazine about legal advice would come under a lot less scrutiny than someone disbarred for ethics violations would

Like you could argue about whether this is fair -- me being actually unqualified is different from someone who probably does know very well what he's talking about and was disbarred just for doing sleazy things with employees at his practice -- but it makes sense

That was kind of my point with Laura vs. Phil -- she's just "not a therapist", he's actually specifically *not allowed to be a therapist*
