How in the HELL does that example make the case. WTFFFFF. One driver got away with a horrible thing so all drivers should get away with bad things because... what?

No they should all be accountable! And having a union would make that happen as well as having the bonus of making drivers not live in abject poverty!

And your genius avatar to support that cause is the one driver fired for dropping a person on the side of the road in a wheelchair. You have... strange strategic priorities

There are 100s of people sexually assaulted each year by Uber drivers but because you didn’t see their viral tweet I guess that doesn’t matter.

Is it your experience that unions always do a better job of "policing their own" than management or external institutions Because sometimes that may be true but there are many obvious cases where it isn't (teacher's unions going to bat for a member who committed assault)

no but management is pretty much always at cross purposes so it doesnt matter. Even that settlement you mention neglects to resolve the fact that uber heavily disincentivises accommodations for the disabled it just shifts all of the burden onto the workers.

As I said when this first came up, obviously everything about Uber would be better if drivers had company-owned vehicles or, failing that, Uber provided compensation for cleaning and interior maintenance as a matter of course

However, the idea that drivers NEED this kind of support to comply with the ADA is false And it is deeply rooted in ableism It doesn't actually cost you anything to let a wheelchair user or a service dog user ride in your car It's easy and it's free

And it's very important to push back on this kind of discourse in my view, this idea that there's "no personal animus, only economic deprivation" at play here It's almost ALL personal animus People actually do HATE disabled people and do this shit out of MALICE

Jesus Christ imagine if I said someone canceled my ride because I was Asian and you got all these well meaning people being like "Okay but you understand Uber doesn't pay their drivers to get the Asian smell out"

There's a reason this suddenly becomes a huge issue when it's a blind person with a service dog and not, say, families with literal snot-nosed kids getting dirt on everything Or folded-up wheelchairs are somehow much worse for scratching up the paint than any other luggage

Christ, this thing. I remember this bizarre concotion of the driver leasing the car from the mob and that’s why they refused the ride. And of course, since the rider had a Jewish name, they were rich and why were they fucking with working people’s livelihood.

All the stories made up to explain why the driver refused basically had the same thing in common: a worldview that only allows for oppression of workers by capital, and thus all incidents must be hammered into that shape. And since the driver was a worker...
