To the degree that I am sympathetic to the argument that calling PhDs "Dr" in social situations outside of their field is unnecessary and elitist, I am completely unsympathetic to the argument that calling MDs "Dr" is any different or any better

I say we follow in the footsteps of George Miller (himself an MD) and drop the historically inaccurate term "doctor" for physicians and instead go with "organic mechanic" Which is both accurate and fun

Doctor means teacher in latin so unless your medical doctor teaches on the side, their degree is just a sparkling bit of paper.

That's okay, we're not speaking Latin. And as a PhD who isn't employed to teach, I still deserve the honorific "Dr."
