To the degree that I am sympathetic to the argument that calling PhDs "Dr" in social situations outside of their field is unnecessary and elitist, I am completely unsympathetic to the argument that calling MDs "Dr" is any different or any better

You wanna go all the way and be a Quaker and say we should all be on a first-name basis that's fine If the idea is to throw shade at the humanities and social sciences and teachers specifically for not being "real doctorates" then ha ha fuck off turd

I say we follow in the footsteps of George Miller (himself an MD) and drop the historically inaccurate term "doctor" for physicians and instead go with "organic mechanic" Which is both accurate and fun

i don't ever insist on being addressed as "doctor" but if you're going to title me as anything, "doctor" is in fact what's appropriate dudes who have a problem with that are just telling on themselves

I don’t use a title most of the time. But when a document or a form forces me to use a title? I’m damn well using the one I earned.

My Mom has a PhD and she had no problem with anyone calling her by her first name - students, staff & colleagues alike. But she was not “Mrs.” or “Ms.” anymore after she got her degree - and students who were intentionally disrespectful (mostly young men) liked to use “Mrs.”

This conversation about whether or not the proper honorific should be used really only started when women started getting PhDs - it is a gendered conversation from the start. Also coincides with the lowering of the status of the social sciences and education as areas of study.

All our professors were Dr so and so and I can see why Dd. BIden stuck. MDs are practitioners and most don't do research anyways.

Here's the thing -- while Dr. Laura pretending her PhD in physiology makes her a credentialed mental health professional is extremely scummy, I think Dr. Phil is actually worse
