I don’t like being the cooperator in the prisoners dilemma while the other side keeps defecting. I also don’t like the consequences of mutual annihilation if both of us defect. It’s definitely a pickle.

In prisoner's dilemma it's better to defect if you know the other side will defect. You get more of an annihilation from cooperating.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prisoner%27s_dilemma …

But, in a repeated game, that defection needs to be accompanied by signaling that future cooperation will be met with cooperation. It may never work... but it at least teaches the costs of defection and the benefits of cooperation. If the other side chooses annihilation...

No, you don't understand The situation where "both sides get annihilated" if both defect is by definition not a Prisoner's Dilemma and the math is therefore different
@Lollardfish's point is that Defect/Defect - "Then how about NOBODY follows the rules?" - doesn't mitigate harm1 reply 0 retweets 4 likes -
Replying to @arthur_affect @jayacoop and
The Prisoner's Dilemma is the situation where if we both break the rules, I get to mitigate some of the harm of you breaking the rules - the worst case scenario for me is Cooperate/Defect

If that is not actually the case, and Defect/Defect is worse, then all of the stuff about the Prisoner's Dilemma doesn't apply If it's a game of Chicken and a Defect/Defect scenario leads to us both dying horribly I *can't* "punish" you for defecting, it's never worth it
