People of the past often knew myths were made up at the time and even if people are not fans of something the myth comparison is more about common cultural language. "When Thanos snapped his fingers," can be "Shaka, When the Walls Fell." Comics≠ Religious stories.

I mean "sell you something" as in literally, "I bet a bunch of people will buy this because it entertains them" Which isn't how ancient texts were written because the capacity to distribute and sell them in that matter didn't exist

Side-note: Captain America is, sort of, part of Dublin's folklore. There is a pretty funny story there with Marvel not noticing something until 2010 or thereabouts.
