I enjoy much of the MCU but superheroes in modern cinema are definitely more commentary than mythology

comic book superheroes are modern mythology, but unfortunately modern mythology is also owned and operated by capitalist hypermonopolies the colonization of the imagination quite literal

I think if you broaden the definition of "mythology" to the maximum possible extent this is true But I think it's more meaningful to say "mythology in our culture has been replaced with commercial fiction" It gets the point across more clearly

Our view of mythology often ignores that it was propaganda from Gilgamesh to Oracle visits to the foundation of Rome by escaped Trojans. Wouldn't modern mythology be the same?

I just don't think that a commercial product that everyone who makes and consumes it understands is pure fiction designed to entertain the viewer as a customer is the same thing as "mythology"

That’s true, though it can serve as an interesting jumping off point if you look at the commonalities. The existence of crossover events for marketing purposes, for example (the star-studded lists of Argonauts, the lists of minor heroes in the Iliad)

Stuff like Antigone, where Sophocles built on an existing myth to make a specific point not unfamiliar to fundamentalist Christians shouting about some government thing not being stronger than "god's law" today.
