This really applies to almost every movie that gets sequels because good "first movies" were usually written as standalone movies that tell a complete story and to make it into a franchise you have to mess up something about the original resolutionhttps://twitter.com/AnaMardoll/status/1337391888605835266 …

I mean, Rocky is obviously an example, right? Does that need to be said? It was plain as day that the original movie was about the idea that Rocky actually become champion was impossible, but for him to get as close as he did was how he finally earned self-respect

And the original implied ending of the movie was that he goes back to his ordinary working-class life with Adrian but with this memory of the one day he went the distance against the champ nothing can defeat him anymore

And it's just like c'mon guys Rocky 2 rips the poignancy away from that with its fucking literalism Sure why don't we revisit every bittersweet ending and give it a nice thick honey glaze Have a Casablanca 2 where Rick kills Hitler

What's funny is the first movie makes it clear that Rocky only stands a chance against Apollo because Apollo isn't taking the fight seriously. Then Rocky II shows Apollo is taking the fight DEADLY SERIOUSLY and yet...Rocky does better this time?
