Y'all like QTs with controversial opinions, so: QT with the name of a sequel/prequel that, regardless of standalone quality, profoundly misunderstood or mangled the themes present in movie(s) preceding it in the franchise.

I mean as a movie I enjoy watching it just fine but it absolutely ruined the Terminator series, by making it into a series It sucks because T1 was so damn good and people barely remember what originally made it good

The thing is that the people who really like T2 still wish that T2 were the last Terminator movie But the very existence and massive success of T2 *guaranteed* that there would be a T3, and that the series would go on chasing diminishing returns as long as possible

Not just like on the meta level The actual plot of T2 was specifically written so that hey now we can change whatever the fuck we want with time travel if we want to make another movie

So if they made it so that their actions actually cause Judgement Day would it be ok? Or did you have other problems with it?

Also curious what you think T2 mangled in terms of T1 themes.

Like, I get that, it's just that T2 had such a hopeful, triumphant message and T3 was such a total, grim bummer.

I read a long time ago that Cameron’s original idea for the sequel was to make the entire movie simply the war between the humans & the machines, and to have the final shot be of Kyle Reese following the T-800 through the time machine back to the beginning of the first film.

So you’d have the two halves of the story locked in an eternal loop, each leading to the other half forever.

Time travel messes up so many stories. I only like the tightly closed loop ones. Like 12 Monkeys. I enjoy the dark fatalism and irony, when the circle closes again. What I don't like is the lazy writing that ensues when the writers decide they can just rewrite the story.

Right, exactly T1 was an all too rare example of a closed time loop story that stuck to its guns and kept the logic airtight T2 threw all that away

The weird thing is that, even with this time-travel-to-change-history dynamic, each new film pretends all the previous movies didn't happen.
