I mean as a movie I enjoy watching it just fine but it absolutely ruined the Terminator series, by making it into a series It sucks because T1 was so damn good and people barely remember what originally made it good

The thing is that the people who really like T2 still wish that T2 were the last Terminator movie But the very existence and massive success of T2 *guaranteed* that there would be a T3, and that the series would go on chasing diminishing returns as long as possible

Not just like on the meta level The actual plot of T2 was specifically written so that hey now we can change whatever the fuck we want with time travel if we want to make another movie

I wish these were not part of the same question (misunderstood/mangling). T2 and Aliens both deeply understood their prior movie's themes, and decided to challenge them. Any mangling that occurred was wholly intentional.

I totally agree on Aliens, I've always thought it lacked something mythologically powerful that Alien had so much of.

T2 was designed to be a kids movie. Adolescent John Connor was basically an imitation of Bart Simpson, complete with catchphrases. All the costume changes, chase scenes, etc, were designed to sell maximize the amount of different action figures and accessories.

Even with a wink and a nod I don't see how the hell you can defend the movie that introduced "Hasta la vista, baby" as being on the same level as the movie that introduced "I'll be back"

Yeah, Aliens has the advantage of building on something that was already there in the first movie (the other eggs), it's more of a tonal and thematic misunderstanding. T2, you summed it up.

"that was Skynet's last ditch effort, well, except for this other last ditch effort, the T1000, that it inexplicably held in reserve somehow and somehow sent it back despite only having time to send one terminator back"
