They don't actually believe gay men are gay in order to be good allies I mean it'd be fucked up if they did but they don't give men that kind of credit The extremist radfem line in the 70s was that gay men were extreme misogynists who wanted to prove they didn't need women

Whenever I bring this up it sounds like I'm just talking shit but I swear this is a thing, it was a quite detailed set of diatribes you can find in stuff like the Redstockings archives

It makes sense if you know how TERFs think. If gender is a caste system, male homosexuality must be a means to hoard male privilege. Presumably lesbianism would be considered understandable if misguided, but they need TERF lesbians to help harass trans women and Elliot Page.

Well TERFs in the 70s had it all worked out The Redstockings in particular saw themselves as a labor union ("labor" as in childbirth) Men are bosses and women are workers in the marketplace of sex and reproduction Women need to unionize and strike for better conditions

So you can see why they disliked both gay men and women In their world gay men are WORSE than straight men, they're not even giving you a job The equivalent of a capitalist who decides to shut down the factory and put the money into a business that doesn't need employees

And in the Redstockings' personal view lesbians were misguided and unhelpful Like someone who, rather than joining the union and strikes for better wages, quits their job entirely and just becomes permanently unemployed, a bum

They specifically described lesbians as *giving up their leverage*, that if you don't have anything a man could potentially want, you're dropping out of "sexual politics" completely and can't be any help to your sisters

It's... Fucked up And political lesbians at the time were the same belief system, just picking the other option - "I *do* think we can all just quit our jobs and work for ourselves and we don't need access to male capital"

It's worth noting that the specific reason the Redstockings objected so strongly to gay people was this conservative preoccupation with babies that kind of pervaded 1970s politics All of society being based on who's gonna have the babies and raise them

It was only via motherhood and control over birthing and raising a man's children that women had "leverage" Gay men and lesbians were fobbing off this all-important responsibility of creating the next generation onto others

Which, in the case of women, was seen as abject and pitiful surrender, and in the case of men, was seen as monstrously arrogant and selfish

I think the most interesting thing about the progression of the "third wave" is how normalized childfree life has become and how this pressing issue just isn't a big part of most people's lives And the conservative/TERF backlash to it is fucking INTENSE

Today's TERFs say it every other sentence - "But what about FERTILITY, what about HAVING BABIES, what about the FAMILY"
