Feeling so beneficent giving away a $16 rice cooker for free on a neighborhood forum, as though my exhausted ass has the will or the energy to try and actually sell it

Not that I'm one to get political or anything but I feel like this is the problem with a lot of giveaway "charity"-- someone does us the favor of taking shit we didn't have the will/energy to do something with and then we feel like our good person dues are paid up

That's why mutual aid is a much better model than charity-- when we think of it as folks working together to help each other in different ways, rather than noblesse oblige, it stops reinforcing existing inequity and starts to be about collective problem-solving.

There's the episode of Frasier where in a sort of fit of desperation he asks his listeners if they have a heartwarming story of genuine Christmas goodwill to share and someone tells him a story of trying to throw away a nasty old pair of sneakers

He decides he can drop them off at the dumpster behind his work rather than wait for garbage day, but he doesn't want them stinking up his car so he tosses them on the roof, only they fall off at an intersection and a homeless guy grabs them

And rather than make a big deal out of it, he keeps driving "So you... accidentally gave away... a pair of shoes you intended to throw in the garbage... through absolutely no effort on your part other than to choose to continue driving rather than get out of the car"

I think about that episode a lot when thinking about what people decide qualifies as charity
