Cast-iron skillets aren't even expensive, they're like $20 and will probably last orders of magnitude longer than any lightweight nonstick pan at the same price point They tend to say this because they take more effort to take care of, but it's really not that big a dealhttps://twitter.com/courtenlow/status/1336850642346840066 …

Wait how is this the second “cast iron skillets are for the virtue-signaling wealthy!” take I’ve seen? https://twitter.com/imbobswaget/status/1336814377849286657 …

You can also accidentally leave one outside for a winter, and re-season it without issue. They’re near impossible to ruin.

Yeah it's the Sam Vimes boots theory again, only engineered They've tried to stop selling stuff you only ever have to buy once and never breaks and needs replacing -- there's no profit for them in it They try to push the flimsy crap on you

It's like how clothes are immeasurably cheaper today because of overseas sweatshop labor -- just throwing out free T-shirts at concerts and shit -- but those T-shirts are expected to fall apart after going through the laundry a few times

The Vimes Boots Theory is awesome because it's not exactly a new insight But it's putting in very clear, simple, everyday terms the thing that asshole yuppies would say when they smirk and go "Listen it's all about cash flow"

Like, you know, they're over there talking about how envious of how people with seven-figure paychecks can increase their wealth faster than people with six-figure paychecks because they don't need to beg the bank for a mortgage when they snag a new rental property

Meanwhile we're over here talking about not being able to qualify for a credit card and therefore not being able to afford a decent jacket that doesn't fall apart after one winter
