Cast-iron skillets aren't even expensive, they're like $20 and will probably last orders of magnitude longer than any lightweight nonstick pan at the same price point They tend to say this because they take more effort to take care of, but it's really not that big a dealhttps://twitter.com/courtenlow/status/1336850642346840066 …

I know that anything that takes more effort and time is a greater burden on busy poor people than idle rich people but It's a minuscule difference compared to the difference between using a skillet at all and microwaving something

If you're, like, homeless and carrying your cookware with you from place to place on a regular basis then the greater weight of a cast iron pan might become an issue But a fairly minor one compared to how quickly that aluminum pan will snap off its handle under rough treatment

Replying to @arthur_affect
The greater weight can also be an issue for someone like me, with hypermobile wrists and hands. Heavier cookware is generally painful or impossible to cook with for me

That's fair and valid, and a shame because it's very difficult to engineer around (Teflon was their attempt to do so, but the thing that makes cast iron specifically better than Teflon is the higher amount of thermal mass)
