Cast-iron skillets aren't even expensive, they're like $20 and will probably last orders of magnitude longer than any lightweight nonstick pan at the same price point They tend to say this because they take more effort to take care of, but it's really not that big a dealhttps://twitter.com/courtenlow/status/1336850642346840066 …

Wait how is this the second “cast iron skillets are for the virtue-signaling wealthy!” take I’ve seen? https://twitter.com/imbobswaget/status/1336814377849286657 …

I know that anything that takes more effort and time is a greater burden on busy poor people than idle rich people but It's a minuscule difference compared to the difference between using a skillet at all and microwaving something

If you're, like, homeless and carrying your cookware with you from place to place on a regular basis then the greater weight of a cast iron pan might become an issue But a fairly minor one compared to how quickly that aluminum pan will snap off its handle under rough treatment

(I do think that this wave of emphasis on making things compact and lightweight that most people, even poor people in small apartments, don't have to pick up and move very much very often was kind of just a consumerism scam to sell more shit)

Yup. And if you hunt flea markets and yard sales they can really get cheap as hell.

You can usually find uncared-for cast iron in thrift stores. Spend a little time with a scrubber and some olive oil and you'll have a pan for life.

You can also accidentally leave one outside for a winter, and re-season it without issue. They’re near impossible to ruin.

Yeah it's the Sam Vimes boots theory again, only engineered They've tried to stop selling stuff you only ever have to buy once and never breaks and needs replacing -- there's no profit for them in it They try to push the flimsy crap on you

And I mean, once it’s been used a while, you actually need to spend LESS time cleaning it. Like, DO NOT spend too much time cleaning it. Cast iron pans are great for “fuck it” people.

I bought mine 20 years ago for $20 as a student (US made even!) and it’s still my most used pan, even though I have other more expensive pots and pans. When it’s right for the job, it’s great and takes much less effort than the other pans too.
