No one really gives all that much of a shit about the complex metaphysics here, we're just saying you can be a woman and have a penis Not that different from the 30s

Wrong then and wrong now. I'd be deeply surprised by seeing that from that era too.

Because it's not that compelling? Sorry you know the truth of it but the record has been completely expunged? If you're right it's a bind, but if you're wrong...

Of course it wasn't completely expunged, but it was an act of terror intended to shift public opinion and people's sense of what was "normal", and it worked Hence people treating Harry Benjamin "inventing transsexuality" after working with Kinsey in the 50s like a big shock

But Benjamin was one of Hirschfeld's colleagues who'd fled to the US and was open about the fact that he was building on Hirschfeld's ideas None of this is secret or truly lost knowledge, a lot if it is on the fucking Internet, just driven out of respectable conversation

Christ, thanks to the way the culture war works TERFs talk like trans people were invented in the *2010s* Even though your feminist foremother Janice Raymond wrote a 220-page diatribe against them in 1979 Reactionary politics thrives on amnesia

No not really Most people today would agree that "transsexual" and "transgender" mean the same thing

"Transgender" was coined to try to avert specific misconceptions John Oliven first used the term to try to combat the perception being trans was "sexual" in the sense of a "sexual fetish" Virginia Prince used it as her preferred term over "transvestite" for being "non-op"

But if you can agree that the previous set of people described by "transsexual" didn't do it to pursue sexual gratification and often didn't pursue surgery or were of two minds about it - something Hirschfeld observed *in the 1930s* - then we can agree it's just a damn word
