the brief flirtation with using the awkward "transgenderist" to mean "non-op" amuses me, as did a certain trans IRC server that had separate channels for "CDtalk", "TVtalk", "TStalk", "TGtalk", and the like only to see them all gradually merge into one

it wasn't ever clear that "transvestite" ever meant anything except "crossdresser but more scandalous", and it's actually been fascinating how the separate "crossdresser" community has passed mostly out of the discourse as an identity
