George Bailey actually seriously is legally and morally obligated to force Uncle Billy into retirement though Like that is legitimately absolutely something the homeowners could and should sue him over if they found out how their money got misplaced

I empathize greatly with an old dude with a pet raven who's obviously living with severe untreated ADHD (because it's the 1940s) and self-medicating the resulting depression and anxiety with alcohol

But you don't see me collecting big cash payments from my followers and putting them in an envelope I walk around carrying in my hands For exactly this reason

thinking of what a remake of IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE would look like today and it's so fucking grim "but george! just think of all the people your Posts touched!" "every time a gofundme completes, an angel gets its wings!" 47% of the town fucking *loves* mr. potter

hard to imagine what career nu-Bailey could even have like, "local boy starts a bank and helps out his neighbors" doesn't even make sense anymore, everyone would be like "but okay seriously, where'd the money come from george"

My Grinchiest opinion is that George and Uncle Billy both committed multiple crimes and should be in prison.
-
Yes George obviously knew Billy was unfit for a position of trust over other people's funds and kept him around anyway out of literal nepotism The whole thing is literally a textbook violation of basic law governing financial institutions

Never occurred to me before, but it is absolutely wild that just a few years after the Great Depression, Capra makes a film where a run on an irresponsible bank is depicted as a real burden on the poor beleaguered banker.
-
Capra was extremely anti-FDR and anti-bailout, he was a lifelong Republican
