Like when we're talking about big constitutional principles, people just shrug off the idea of slow creeping fascism caused by the military being allowed to just run itself without outside input "I don't want a civilian without relevant experience meddling in military business"

But when talking about oversight of their kids' education people are fucking GUNG-HO about the need for "checks and balances" They FLIP THE FUCK OUT when you say a teacher or a principal should join the school board "Excuse me, the POINT of the board is OVERSIGHT"

"Do you want this insular class of education professionals, represented by unions that bleed us taxpayers dry without deigning to explain what they spend our money on, to oversee THEMSELVES? To become a wholly unaccountable institution?"

"No! That's why we have a school board! That's why it's entirely proper and correct that we elect some random retired old fart who owns a plumbing supply company and believes Jesus created Earth in six days to that position! We want outsiders with real-world experience there!"

I'm sorry that my brain made this connection I don't even care THAT much about Biden appointing Lloyd Austin as SecDef but fuck I hate school board elections so fucking much

I personally think that, by their logic, I, myself -- a weird young-ish Internet person with no kids and no intention of ever having them -- should be on the school board I also think I should also someday be the Secretary of Defense, or someone like me should

i read a lot of military scifi and there's a lot of "libertarians" running around that space who also think that an entirely self-governing military detached from civilian control is clearly the best and most rational system

these people also like to drop references to the classics, because they think they're educated

Wait, is that a for real thing that happens? Teachers don't get elected to school boards due to bias? What bias? And who would be more qualified exactly?

In most of the places I've lived a former teacher who runs for the school board faces a serious uphill battle
