I mean look calling someone an A-hole is inherently funny "A-hole" is such a great word It's so much funnier than actually calling someone an "asshole"

Just like "freaking" is actually a better way to express excitement or frustration than "fucking" in many situations And calling something "crap" as an insult is actually more devastating than calling it "shit"

If something is "crap" it's not even bad in an interesting enough way for it to be worth getting an R rating talking about it

This reminds me of the tweet saying there’s no worse insult than asking of someone, “who is this clown” because it both implies that they are both foolish and not foolish enough to be well known

Yeah "creative insults" are self-defeating This is one of the only actual important lessons I would teach my kids if I had any If you spend a lot of effort trying to find a memorable way to insult someone you're just advertising they've gotten under your skin

I mean ok I got the lecture when I was a kid from teachers and whatnot that "you don't need to swear, swearing is lazy" and then getting a book of "creative Shakespearean insults from the Elizabethan era" and whatnot In hindsight it was very annoying

Everyone knows if you actually use some multi-sentence "creative insult" from Shakespeare you're just gonna get shoved into a locker harder The actual social purpose of profanity *is to be lazy*, laziness in language is itself an important signalling mechanism

Which is exactly why setting a book aside saying "This is crap" or even just "This is dumb" -- because it's even lazier -- is so much more devastating than some histrionic "What is this dipshitting fucknuttery" of the kind some annoying Twitter accounts indulge in
