As someone who grew up in a house having to harshly censor any use of swear words or media containing swear words, and as someone who then dropped "fuck" and "shit" and "asswipe" very freely as an adult, I'm of an age where I've come to appreciate minced oaths for their own sake

I mean look calling someone an A-hole is inherently funny "A-hole" is such a great word It's so much funnier than actually calling someone an "asshole"

Just like "freaking" is actually a better way to express excitement or frustration than "fucking" in many situations And calling something "crap" as an insult is actually more devastating than calling it "shit"

If something is "crap" it's not even bad in an interesting enough way for it to be worth getting an R rating talking about it

This reminds me of the tweet saying there’s no worse insult than asking of someone, “who is this clown” because it both implies that they are both foolish and not foolish enough to be well known

Yeah "creative insults" are self-defeating This is one of the only actual important lessons I would teach my kids if I had any If you spend a lot of effort trying to find a memorable way to insult someone you're just advertising they've gotten under your skin

The kids these days, of course, have learned this lesson, that's what "Ok boomer" is about

most cutting thing you can say is "who's this clown?" because it implies they're a) a clown & b) not even one of the better-known clowns

this dynamic is absolutely what underlies the rise of and outrage about "okay boomer" the absolute pure, uninterested dismissal of it, directed against people who are entirely unused to such

The Internet really made cold, perfunctory dismissal so much more devastating "lmao"

Yeah - creative insults are best about showing off the cleverness and wit of the insulter; they don't really land any harder. It's usually why they work best in rap battles and stuff where it's not about insulting the other person at all, but competing with their insults.

And which is why they need all sorts of non-insulting flair, like rhymes, or wordplay, or meter.

This is why my favourite swear is the c word. It's succinct, expresses your views on one syllable.

Yeah well I think the consensus right now is that it's problematic, at least if you don't have one
