I'm not defending Cyberpunk 2077 and I honestly have no idea if it's good, but the TLOU2 stuff has made me utterly unwilling to trust professional critics about a title whose controversy stems largely from its gender/sexuality themes

The buggest knock thats been made against the game for me is that one of the reviews mentioned how it doesnt really dig into any of the cyberpunk themes in any meaninful way.

I have felt from the start that that is in fact a ckickbaity shield being used to mask people's real issues Like the game may suck, but I don't grant anyone the authority to declare what is or isn't any genre

I was just excited that a game review even mentioned themes or actively criticized a game for doing one poorly. Felt closer to a movie review, which was nice coming from the gaming space.

It's not helpful when the effect is to remind devs that if they put queer characters in they will be relentlessly attacked by both critics and gamers, with the critics finding every single thing they've ever done besides the queer characters to pretend that's what they object to

For instance, Polygon acknowledging that God of War 2018 starts with a fridging and saying "it's okay, the plot justified it," and ignoring/excusing Kratos's horrifyingly violent past, but excoriating TLOU2 for Ellie not having constructive problem solving skills

This just feels like it's an inherent issue w/any culture/arts website that isn't just one person. I mean, what's worse; the authors being subject to editing so their piece is no longer as personal/unique, or the naked hypocrisy that results from both appearing in this form?

I don't know that a publication publishing multiple people with different opinions is "hypocrisy"
