The latter of whom, it transpires, has enlisted to go fight in Iraq (this story taking place in the early 2000s) out of a sense of duty Which leads to the former blowing up at him and calling him an idiot and a moron and a mindless drone

And leads to this big dramatic tropey scene in the game that's the first guy's attempt at actually explaining what he's feeling in that moment, all the self-loathing and repressed admiration (bordering on homoerotic) he has for his friend

It's funny because it's meta Like if you don't know the subtext then his villain monologue about "stealing his death scene" is completely literal But if you get it then the subtext of what's really happening irl is the same as what's happening in the game

Anyway the setup is the requisite near TPK against the final boss, finding out the final boss has already opened the horrific portal to the void between the worlds, which can only be closed again by taking the MacGuffin and taking it back through it, destroying the bearer's soul

The only two survivors are the Paladin and the Rogue, and the Paladin calmly says, "A Paladin's life is duty. Take the others back to the temple for resurrection, and tell them --" "I stab him in the back with my poisoned dagger. Sneak Attack"

What better caper, what better heist than to steal the death of a hero? After spending my years in dissolution, whoring and gambling away every cent of my ill-gotten gains While you've been building up a life of sacrifice and service, to end in one last heroic blaze of glory

Well I'm afraid I've outsmarted you one last time, of friend For once I get to be the hero The one people make statues and paintings of, whose name goes down in history I get to be something better than a selfish lowlife coward, for once Even if I had to cheat to do it

And you... You get to know how it feels to be me, for once To be the one left behind while others get the glory You get to sit in the tavern and grow wistful in your cups at the thought of fallen comrades who bled and died so you could come home safe
