Okay you know what really cheesy moment cuts me straight to the bone When the Last-Minute Betrayal turns out to be the Heroic Sacrificehttps://twitter.com/bkrafty89/status/1335419753586814976 …

This is such a specific series of events and yet I swear I've seen this trope multiple times Mission Control: "There's not enough time -- whoever triggers the self-destruct couldn't possibly have enough time to get out before the blast"

*somber silence* Square-Jawed Hero: "Well then it's clear what has to happen. The rest of you get to safety, I'll -- " The Morally Ambiguous One Who's Only In It For the Money: "I'm afraid I can't let you do that, friend" *shoots them with paralyzing dart*

Flunky Sidekick Who Never Trusted That Asshole: "I should've known, you asshole, I never trusted you! How much did it take to pay you off? How long have you been planning -- " *gets shot with dart*

MAOWOIIFtM: *silently drags hero and sidekick to safety, then picks up MacGuffin and walks wordlessly into self-destruct place* *on radio to Mission Control* "Tell them I'm sorry. For everything." *BOOM*

I know it's a fucking trope and I'm still tearing up at it anyway.

There's this D&D movie from a while ago, Of Dice and Men (not to be confused with the nonfiction book of the same title about the history of D&D) About this meta shit where people in a D&D group use the game to vent their issues with each other

And one of the things that's going on is there's this unlikely friendship between this typical lowlife nerd guy (who plays the party Rogue) and this cool jock dude who plays with them (who plays the party Paladin)

The latter of whom, it transpires, has enlisted to go fight in Iraq (this story taking place in the early 2000s) out of a sense of duty Which leads to the former blowing up at him and calling him an idiot and a moron and a mindless drone

And leads to this big dramatic tropey scene in the game that's the first guy's attempt at actually explaining what he's feeling in that moment, all the self-loathing and repressed admiration (bordering on homoerotic) he has for his friend

It's funny because it's meta Like if you don't know the subtext then his villain monologue about "stealing his death scene" is completely literal But if you get it then the subtext of what's really happening irl is the same as what's happening in the game

Anyway the setup is the requisite near TPK against the final boss, finding out the final boss has already opened the horrific portal to the void between the worlds, which can only be closed again by taking the MacGuffin and taking it back through it, destroying the bearer's soul
