real talk, if Wakanda really existed there's almost no way they wouldn't reject Christianity, culturally or otherwise, as an imperial cult

Oh absolutely. Isn't it textually non-Christian? (Kind of wish they had represented a real world major religion of the region)

There is an official state religion around the goddess Bast, who supposedly led the Five Tribes to the Gift (the vibranium meteorite) in the first place and who bestowed the mantle of Black Panther on her chosen champion, from whom the royal family descends

Zuri, who is the master of ceremonies at the ritual combat for the throne, is the High Priest of Bast The Jabari broke from the other tribes partly because they have their own religion, led by the monkey god Hanuman, who said that Bast's Gift was a test passed by rejecting it

Bast is an Egyptian deity irl and Hanuman a Hindu deity, of course But I headcanon that like many other cultures Wakandans have syncretized their deities with other countries', at least for the purpose of explaining their beliefs to outsiders (on the rare occasion it comes up)

Is it in a specific area?

I think Wakanda is generally located around like...southeast/central Africa?

It doesn't seem coastal anyway; or Saharan, or too densely forested. So like, visually, maybe Rwanda? Althoguh I guess it was mostly shot in Georgia.

The movie lets you see its location on the map, it's north of Lake Turkana, which is in Kenya irl Wakanda is formed by taking a chunk out of the rl neighboring countries South Sudan, Uganda, Kenya and Ethiopia

Irl this area is overwhelmingly Christian, with Islam the second biggest minority religion With Ethiopia having a long and storied history with Christianity Although everything is of course influenced by pre-Christian belief systems
