#TIL people consider garlic a spice, which is interesting. I never really thought of it as a spice, but rather an herb--but now I have to figure out what my semantic categories are!

Traditionally an herb is from the leaf of a plant and any other plant part is a spice Garlic is kind of in between because it's a bulb, which is made of leaves around a stem in the botanical sense but people think of as a root

Of course, unlike most other spices people really do just eat roasted garlic cloves on their own, at which point it's a vegetable (same with eating hot peppers)
